Ecostone Composite

Glass fibre reinforced gypsum, modified by addition of specially selected and developed thermosetting water-based polymers, is the basis of a, eco-friendly composite material called ECOSTONE.

In Holland 1980’s, an investigation was performed by DSM into its mechanical properties such as bending strength, tensile strength and long-term performance under constant load and fatigue load. The influence of fire, moisture and temperature on mechanical properties was determined. The equilibrium moisture content at various relative humidities, the moisture content under natural weathering conditions, the coefficient of linear expansion and the microstructure were studied.

Furthermore, the durability was investigated under accelerated ageing conditions and outdoor exposure.

The results showed that the polymer-modified glass fibre reinforced gypsum has good mechanical properties under tension and is resistant to the Western European climate. A new construction method was born.

Extensive further research and testing proved that the material could be used in a wide range of architectural and sculptural applications. The system is easy to cast into molds and offers a wide range of  aesthetically pleasing finishes and surface textures, even with very fine detailed surfaces.

During the 90’s the material has been used successfully for large architectural outdoor applications in the UK, Europe and the Middle East by several innovative companies and was used for the first time at Century City in South Africa in 1997 by MTE’s Dirk Durnez who at that time, had built up 7 years’ experience with the systems in projects in USA, Asia, and Europe.

Many themed architectural and creative projects throughout the country and in Dubai followed.

Anno 2023 the Century City structures are still in optimum condition and have proven their quality.

Dirk Durnez introduced the technology in South Africa in 1997 for the construction of Ratanga Junction and Century City.

Canal Walk : over 1200 demising columns, capitals, bases, façade panels and architectural features  in various ‘stone’ and faux metal finishes

The entire skyline of Century City is constructed with premanufactured lightweight but durable modular panels
